Irish Re-Jig

On 13 June 2008, I wrote a short post entitled "Brave Bogtrotters Banish Brussels". Illustrated with a picture of a couple of fair colleens in their tricoleur swimwear, I congratulated the Irish people for their good sense and robust independence. They had had a good look at the Fritzes, Christianos and Jacques who planned to run the Irish state as a satellite of Brussels, and had said "no tanks, to be sure", or words to that effect.
Well, I take it all back. It was just the old Irish sense of humour, rascals that they are; they never meant to stop the dishonest undemocratic Euro juggernaut, they just wanted to be taken seriously for for a while, until they returned meekly to heel. What a bunch of spineless fenian ratbags they are. All that gibberish about a Free Ireland for the last two hundred years, all those deaths, and now they sign up to become a cadet branch of the overbearing, stifling, malign bureaucracy that passes for government from Europe. And they'll get that wanker Blair as President if they are not careful.
So now it's down to the Czechs and Poles. Only the great Václav Klaus can deliver us from this terrible fate, if he can hold up the Czech ratification until our General Election. Don't hold your breath, but say your prayers, heathen or otherwise.

Excellent line. Few nations are as guilty of pompously believing their own national myths as the Irish. While they would like to imageine themselves as having won their freedom in a bloody war for independence against the British Empire the reality is that they were, of course, as much a part of the UK as Scotland, Wales, Northumbria, Essex etc are today. They 'won' their independence by voting for it in a democratic UK general election having voted against in every democratic election prior to that. Having left the UK what did they achieve? They became a third world country with miserable theocratic elements; God help you if you were a single, pregnant, woman in independent Ireland. Their brightest and best emigrated to the UK mainland. On foreign relations they remained neutral in WWII and in many cases actively collaberated with the Germans, though we must distinguish between the Irish state and the Irish people - whlie the state was pathetic in its neutrality the people themselves joined the British army in their tens of thousands. Finally, towards the end of the 20th century, Ireland became the 'Celtic Tiger' thanks to money taken out of the larger EU economies and handed out to the basket case 3rd world countries like Ireland, Portugal, Spain etc.

Probably the most honest appraisal of Ireland's place in the EU was written in the build up to this 2nd referendum by Kevin Myers:

I think they realised that they would keep having elections until they delivered the preferred result.

Agree with Costello tho.

Costello is a welcome and erudite addition to the comment thread of this threadbare blog.

I have always thought Kevin Myers a sound writer.

Evening, pip; yes, they would have been given a third vote if necessary....

The Czechs and the Poles? Forget them, and forget Grooovey Dave: As a Euro federalist of 'conviction', and as an opportunist happy to say whatever he thinks his audience of the moment wishes to hear, he'll have breathed a deep sigh of relief when the Irish result became known.

The treaty is good for England but, as they say in Notingham, we've 'a mucky road t' go down' beforehand.

Blair is not a wanker; he's an odious little shit.

If you want to know what the EU has up its sleeve to ensure civilian compliance, check this out

http://www.indect-project.eu/

Project Description

Intelligent information system supporting observation, searching and detection for security of citizens in urban environment.

The main objectives of the INDECT project are:

to develop a platform for: the registration and exchange of operational data, acquisition of multimedia content, intelligent processing of all information and automatic detection of threats and recognition of abnormal behaviour or violence,

to develop the prototype of an integrated, network-centric system supporting the operational activities of police officers, providing techniques and tools for observation of various mobile objects,

to develop a new type of search engine combining direct search of images and video based on watermarked contents, and the storage of metadata in the form of digital watermarks,

The main expected results of the INDECT project are:

to realise a trial installation of the monitoring and surveillance system in various points of city agglomeration and demonstration of the prototype of the system with 15 node stations,

implementation of a distributed computer system that is capable of acquisition, storage and effective sharing on demand of the data as well as intelligent processing,
construction of a family of prototypes of devices used for mobile object tracking,

construction of a search engine for fast detection of persons and documents based on watermarking technology and utilising comprehensive research on watermarking technology used for semantic search,

construction of agents assigned to continuous and automatic monitoring of public resources such as: web sites, discussion forums, UseNet groups, file servers, p2p networks as well as individual computer systems,

elaboration of Internet based intelligence gathering system, both active and passive, and demonstrating its efficiency in a measurable way.

The Irish were just playing the old managers and workers game.
Always refuse the first offer and chuck in some extra demands for the second.

There is a wishbone where the spine should be. They are helped by being:

- Irish with a history of subjugation by the English (always a good qualification in a time when History is taught by Hollywood)

- Catholic. I'm convinced that the whole EU entity has Catholicism at its heart. (Another reason why Blair is perfect for Presidency)

This quote from a reader on John Redwood's blog:

"I woke up last night trying to imagine life with no sovereignty; with all the basic rules of common law I have grown up with gone; forced to pay tax with no say in how it was spent to better society; and most of all living in shame in the north region, with a blue flag and circle of gold stars, under a preening dictator, unaccountable in his EU palace as the EU economy flounders. My history and my country gone."

The EU is evil. Tony Blair is like Damien from The Omen. He certainly has the luck of the Devil about him. I don't think he's quite that clever to have pulled some of the stunts that he has. That's because no-one is - at least not a human anyway.

BTW - good post title.

Sometimes the title is the best bit of the whole post, e-k.

Its a sign of our times. The fall of a nation for a mess of potage.

The Irish have sold their birthright, bought with blood, for trinkets and a post dated cheque.

E-K I agree with you on some points and certainly the "Europeans" or at least the Catholic Church have for centuries used the Ireland as a potential backdoor in their attempts to subjugate England. However I am not so sure that is the case here. The Irish have only themselves to blame really as they bought into the euro and are now paying the price. I suspect when the French get their way and they harmonise corporate taxes throughout the EU a lot of the comapanies that put the tiger into the Celts will piss off where the wages are lower. The Irish will have plenty of time to repent their folly then.
