An Erection in the Sussex Countryside

Doubtful that this is of any interest to anyone, but I promised lil.

Am I the only one to have noticed that, as the price of perfectly serviceable, reasonably heavy-duty plastic tents has plummeted (thanks to globalisation and our industrious little yellow friends), the cost of hiring a tent in Britain has gone through the roof?

That's splendid Idle, but are you not a "little previous" with the girls' wedding marquee?

It is indeed an impressive and very pretty erection. A friend was given a canvas marquee from the farmers club who were scaling down their shows after foot and mouth regs put the damper on things. He uses the canvass to protect the woodpile.

I think they're so expensive because there is such a demand for them.

At the recent Open at Royal Birkdale, corporate hospitality firms put up 85,000 sq ft of marquees on a nearby cricket ground.

Over 4 days, they fed and watered nearly 10,000 people at £500 a day. Yes - nearly £5 million in 4 days.

2 weeks earlier, the same marquees had been at Silverstone and they're now on their way to Harewood House. The firm that owns them has so many bookings, they're having to borrow marquees from other companies.

So when's the party chez Idle?

Sorry Lakelander, unaccountably you failed to receive an invite for the drinks party in June or the 32 for dinner a fortnight ago.

It would be unwise to invite you to the idle girls' shindig at the end of August.

Next summer perhaps.

Sniff the dented grass...rustle the lanyards...gently lap the canvas to the breeze...

Paradise...

You've inspired me with a great fund raising idea for my scout group (I'm chairman).

We have a couple of seriously large canvass tents and could hire them out for good money.

Do you think khaki will do for weddings ?

If you can source some material to line the inside of the tents, e-k, you'll have the weddings cracked. A few strategically positioned flowers and presto.

Good extra dosh for the scouts.
