Bandit at Six O'Clock

Gotta love that fighter pilot humour. Splendid chaps.

  1. That Rolls Royce engine has an evocative recall of the spirit of those days - not that I was there, but it was such a distinctive sound to those in my village...

I'd have shouted like that with one that close; the instruments weren't that accurate...

    Good clip Iders - thanks!

  3. There is nothing that warms a soldier's heart quite as much as the first, distant thappa-thappa-thappa of an approaching Chinook when you are cold and wet and knackered. Particularly in a far flung part of the empire where wind and sleet was the order of the day.

  4. Fuk U? arf arf.

There's a chinook that keeps bimbling over my house, Scrobs. Distinctive sound. Like it.

Not as much as a V twin tho..

It really is a ******* fantastic sound. With an ex-Bomber Command father I was brought up on an airbase. As kids we all loved the sound of planes. We could identify all sorts by the engine noise miles away. I saw my first Spitfire display in the 60s and what must have been one of the first Red Arrow displays at the same time. We used to get low level Lightnings on QRA over the house at all hours. We loved it. Years later the RAF were kind enough to let have a crack at flying. I still dive out of the house or look out of the window when I hear airplanes. It really is such a thrill, one I suspect few understand unless they have been brought up with airplanes. Jet Noise: the sound of freedom.

  7. Can't beat the sound of a Vulcan banking over the apron...such a bummer that airshows are so tame now. Elfnsafety an all that. Only way to get a buzz at Yeovilton is to watch the whole thing from a road outside the base..at least the planes fly overhead...

    ReplyDelete
  8. For sheer "Spinal-Tap-the-volume-goes -up-to-11", you cannot beat the English Electric Lightning.

I have never heard anything as loud in my life as one of those aircraft, doing its party trick of a vertical climb with the afterburners cutting in.

The first time I heard one, I was bloody terrified!

  9. Lakelander

You are totally right about the Lightning. Its aerobatic displays were amazing. The Starfighter got close in terms of gut wrenching noise but not quite there. Best air show ever: RAF Greenham Common mid 70s. The jet fighters beat up the runway something rotten. Weather was good too.

  10. Fave planes? These are the ones I love!
    1.Vulcan
2.EE Lightning (Lakelander spot on on sound...truly electrifying)
    3.Tornado
    4.Saab Viggen
    5.Saab Draaken
    6.Hurricane
    7.Buccaneer
    8.Vampire
    10.Harrier

  11. Whoodathort that foxy was a plane spotter?

    Not I.

My favourite plane (and yes, I travelled in it), is Concorde.

    ReplyDelete
  12. A great plane Idle. I have still got my Concorde first day issue. I never got to fly or even get in one but I did go up in a Lightning with full reheat take off. Mind you Concorde's four Olympus engines (I think) must have been pretty impressive even if it lacked Aden cannon and Red Top missiles. Didn't someone once suggest giving Concorde to the RAF to fit with stand off missiles?

  13. Apricot fox's list is a good one. The obvious omissions to me are the Spitfire, and the Lancaster which my dad flew. I've just finshed reading Vulcan 607 about the first Vulcan raid on the Falklands (i'd forgotten there was more than one). It is a good read. I also recently read a great book on the Lightning: I did not realise how many were lost initially until some of the technicals (I think fuel leaks) were sorted. Not that those would have put me off going up.

The Tornado looks great (like the SAABs) but not sure if it was worth it (is it unfair to say jack of all trades and master of none: a bit like anon). I believe its low level role meant it was a bit asthmatic at higher levels.

Hurricane: a lovely aeroplane. Similarly the Buccaneer. The Harrier was of course a world beater which we failed to pursue ourselves. Don't know much about the Vampire except I seem to recall my Chief Flying Instructor telling me he trained on it and they used to manhandle the tails when manoeuvering them on the ground for take off (or was it landing) when still using grass runways. (I was his worst pilot: although perhaps not as bad as Frank Spencer who in that immortal learning to fly episode has his instructor go unconscious; when the tower tries to help and asks if he can recall anything his instructor says something like "they are old pilots and bold pilots but no old bold pilots". It still makes me laugh. )

  14. Tally Ho, chaps!

He must have been the pilot I had on a recent RSA flight from Jo'burg. He happily told us that as there was no effective air traffic control anywhere near the region and as it was good weather and as we would be passing over the Victoria Falls in five minutes he would give us all an opportunity to see them from the air. He then proceeded to lose quite a lot of height and speed and as we approached the Falls turned the 737 almost on its side so we could all look out the window as he performed a slowish circle of the area. Happily everyone had been told to fasten their safety belts or we would all have ended up in a heap in the left hand window seats. The stewardess on my row said he always liked to do that when he was on that service. Who said flying can't be fun?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Excellent, nomad.

You remind me of a flight I took with Singapore Airlines from Singapore to Jakarta in the late 80s. Pilot was an Aussie.

As we rolled towards take off, he asked all those in steerage to put the seats upright, stow the trays in front of them, and to fasten their seat belts, "and for those of you in first class, hang on to your champagne, won't you!"

We first-classers could hear the the resentful mutterings coming from the other side the curtains behind us.

  16. My favourite plane is Concorde and I dreamed of flying in one. Lucky lucky you, Idle. Such a beautiful thing to behold.

I'm afraid this hasn't diminished my idea of your real self at all. I dread the thought of meeting you and finding that you only deliver chocolates.

    ReplyDelete
  17. PS: Further evidence of the lack of air traffic control on that same flight was evidenced when we caught up with a slower plane which had left shortly before us. As we flew alongside, separated only by a few yards, at the same height and speed the passengers on each plane were waving to each other! No five mile separation rubbish over Zimbabwe that's for sure.

I don't know if it is still the case but Aussi pilots also used to drive the Gulf Air planes in the 1970s. They enjoyed throwing them about all over the skies and the passengers used to cheer! I think half of those guys must have been brought up on Phantoms or something in Vietnam as they certainly knew how to fly.

    ReplyDelete
  18. In the increasingly likely event that I am forced to make a living by delivering chocolates, pip, I'll endeavour to do better than Milk Tray.

Bendick's Sporting & Military for the chaps, and Charbonnel et Walker for the dames, I think.

I would not have let that helicopter crash, by the way.

  19. I had a client in Rawalpindi who had a son flying for PIA, nomad. They sent a car for me early one morning, drove me to Islamabad airport, and put me in the front of an old Fokker Friendship for a scheduled flight to Gilgit. We did a complete circle aroung Nanga Parbat, which I think is the 5th highest peak in the world. Good long distance view of the mighty K2. Brunch in Gilgit and back to Islamabad by 1pm. All very memorable.
